WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Nanette Barragán (CA-44) released the following statement after the House of Representatives voted to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
“The impeachment of Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas by extreme House Republicans is a political stunt,” said Rep. Barragán. “The House has wasted months on a baseless impeachment that several Republicans admit lacks any evidence. Real issues that affect American families have been pushed aside to appease an extreme MAGA base and meet the demands of the former President. Republicans claim this impeachment is about border security, yet they have rejected billions in dollars of aid to help address our challenges at the border and their Senate colleagues voted against their own bill that they negotiated with Secretary Mayorkas.
MAGA Republicans do not want to fix our broken immigration system or improve our border security. It’s time for Speaker Johnson to have real, bipartisan negotiations and work to address the challenges at the southern border. Meanwhile, House Democrats will continue to put people over politics and focus on delivering for the American people.”
