Flag Requests

Today, Members of Congress can request American flags that have flown over the Capitol on behalf of their constituents to honor people, groups, or events. The Capitol Flag Program began in 1937 when a Member of Congress requested a flag that had flown over the Capitol. Over the years the focus of the program gradually expanded to encompass the commemoration of national holidays and various special events, as well as to honor the work of groups such as schools and civic organizations.

Flags are flown daily year-round, weather permitting, excluding Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

If you would like to order a U.S. flag from our office, please use the flag order form to calculate the price and shipping costs.

Flags are available in different sizes and fabrics. You may choose to have your new flag flown over the U.S. Capitol for an additional charge. You may request a specific flying date, but due to weather and varying demand, no dates can be guaranteed. Flags flown over the Capitol include a certificate, which may be personalized for a particular person, event, or organization.

The order form will create a printable order for you to print and send to our office with your check.
