May 19, 2021

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Nanette Diaz Barragán has been named to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Board of Visitors.

“The U.S. Coast Guard Academy is a preeminent service academy developing our next generation of high-character leaders committed to serving our country at home and globally. On this day, when the U.S. Coast Guard Academy celebrates its graduating class of 2021, it is my profound honor to have the opportunity to serve on the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Board of Visitors and work with the Academy’s leadership to oversee and ensure our patriotic cadets receive the support and resources they need as they prepare to become U.S. Coast Guard officers,” Congresswoman Barragán said. “The U.S. Coast Guard plays a critical mission in protecting our ports, maritime commerce, waterways and serves as the nation’s first line of defense against drug smugglers. As a member of the House Homeland Committee who represents the Port of Los Angeles, which is home to U.S. Coast Guard Base Los Angeles/Long Beach, I have had the privilege to spend time with the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard and I understand and appreciate the critical role they play to our national security. I am grateful to Speaker Pelosi for this appointment to the Board of Visitors. Semper Paratus!”

The Board oversees morale, discipline, curriculum, instruction, physical equipment, fiscal affairs and academic methods at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, which is based in New London, Connecticut. Between 12-15 U.S. Senators and Congressmembers serve on the Board of Visitors. Congresswoman Barragán was appointed to the Board by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

“With her patriotism and experience, Congresswoman Barragán will make an excellent addition to the Coast Guard Academy Board of Visitors,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi said. “The Board is a cherished national security institution with a long-standing bipartisan tradition, ensuring our cadets have the skills and support to serve our country in uniform. The Coast Guard, and indeed our nation, will be well-served with her leadership in shaping the next generation of Coast Guard heroes that will keep our country secure and our families safe.”

The Academy is a top service academy, granting Bachelor of Science degrees in one of nine engineering or professional majors. About 200 graduates earn a commission as an Ensign in the Coast Guard each year to help ensure the safety, security and stewardship of our nation’s waters.

Joining Congresswoman Barragán as new designees from the U.S. House of Representatives are Congressmembers Joe Courtney (D-Conn.), John Rutherford (R-Fla.), and Lisa McClain (R-Mich.).
