FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 20, 2021

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Nanette Diaz Barragán made the following statement recognizing the inauguration of our new President and Vice President.

“Today’s Inaugural ceremonies are the start of a new day full of hope and anticipation for better times ahead for our nation.

“The American people have been through so much. Our challenges are immense, and the clock is ticking. Our health, our economy, and our planet are all at stake.

“Though the struggles of the coronavirus pandemic, racial injustice, a rise in domestic terrorism, and climate change have rocked our nation to the core, our democratic system has prevailed. For that, we should all breathe a sigh of relief.

“Our free and fair election chose leaders to meet this decisive moment in our history.

“Our new President and Vice President will lead with truth and compassion and will reorient our nation back to our principles of freedom, equality and justice for all.

“It is important to note the historic barriers that are broken by Vice President Kamala Harris. As the first female vice president, she is an inspiration to little girls all over the world. Her example shows what is finally possible – especially for little girls of color who see someone who looks like them with her hand on the Bible on Inauguration Day. Vice President Harris is proof that change is possible.

“With President Biden and Vice President Harris at the helm, we have an opportunity to do so much good for the American people.

“We can overcome COVID-19 and build back better than ever before.

“We can pass bold climate legislation to protect our nation and our planet for future generations.

“We can protect the most vulnerable, uplift long-forgotten communities, and welcome people who come to our nation with big dreams, or when they have nowhere else to go.

“The next four years won’t be easy. Many of our biggest challenges may only amplify unless we take bold action.

“I stand ready to work alongside the Biden-Harris Administration to do right by the American people.”

Nanette Diaz Barragán is proud to represent California’s 44th Congressional District, which includes the communities of Carson, Compton, Florence-Firestone, Lynwood, North Long Beach, Rancho Dominguez, San Pedro, South Gate, Walnut Park, Watts, Willowbrook and Wilmington.
