Rep. Barragán statement on the Homeland Security’s border security bill

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán released the following statement after the House Homeland Security Committee approved H.R. 3548, a border security bill that includes $10 billion dollars for Trump’s border wall.

“The House Homeland Security Committee today approved a border security bill that authorizes $10 billion for constructing an ineffective and wasteful border wall.

I have no doubt that approving money for a border wall is nothing more than trying to satisfy President Trump’s campaign promise. They failed to do even that, by making American taxpayers pay for it.

Experts tell us that a wall will not stop terrorists. Even Customs and Border Protection has said walls are just a speedbump in the desert. This wall would be nothing more than a monument of hate.”

During the hearing, Congresswoman Barragán offered an amendment that would limit the jurisdiction of CBP to 25 miles of the border. Currently, CBP can set up immigration checkpoints and make arrests within 100 miles of the border, which invites widespread constitutional violations

Unfortunately, Republicans opposed the amendment. Today, the committee authorized billions for a border wall that a majority of Americans oppose, for a wall that won’t make us safer.
