Rep. Barragán to be the Second Latina to Serve on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán (CA-44) was selected to serve on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, becoming the first Latina in 10 years to hold a seat on this prestigious committee and only the second Latina ever to do so.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to serve on the Committee of Energy and Commerce,” said Rep. Barragán. “The Committee will be at the forefront of combating climate change and fighting back against the Trump Administration’s efforts to rollback critical environmental regulations. I look forward to being a voice for the communities that have been on the frontlines of the negative health impacts associated with climate change and environmental injustice. From fighting for comprehensive and affordable healthcare for all to ensuring clean air and clean water for our communities, I will work tirelessly for my fellow Americans and the constituents of California’s 44th Congressional District on this committee.”

Since joining Congress, Rep. Barragán has demonstrated the integrity, courage and commitment to the environment that is needed on the committee. She is a founding member of the United for Climate and Environmental Justice Task Force in Congress, which is comprised of Tri-Caucus Members seeking to address the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation on communities of color, whom suffer from environmental disasters first and worst. In the 115th Congress, she also served as the chair of the environmental task forces for both the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the Congressional Progressive Caucus, where she has held panel discussions on environmental justice issues such as the impacts of poor air and water quality on communities of color.

In her first term, Rep. Barragán served on the House Committees on Homeland Security and Natural Resources.
