Rep. Barragán statement on formation of the Congressional Croatian Caucus for the 115th Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán (D-San Pedro), co-chair of the Congressional Croatian Caucus, issued the following statement after the caucus gained formal recognition for the 115th Congress. The congresswoman is the Caucus’s co-chair, with Rep. David Joyce (R-Russell Township).

“San Pedro would not be what it is today without the Croatian American community. Croats were in San Pedro from the very start, and it’s my immense honor to represent them in Congress,” said Rep. Barragán.

“I will continue to do all that I can to promote Croatian Americans in my district. It’s an honor to be the co-chair of the Congressional Croatian Caucus,” she added.

Steve Rukavina, president of the National Federation of Croatian Americans said “The NFCA is very pleased that Rep. Barragán is our Caucus Co-Chair. She will represent in the US Congress the many energetic Croatian Americans of San Pedro, the largest concentration of the Croatian diaspora west of the Mississippi River. We congratulate her on having the Croatian Caucus, founded in 2005, officially recognized by the current 115th Congress.”

The bipartisan Congressional Croatian Caucus promotes bilateral cultural exchange between the United States and Croatia and promotes expanded friendship through business facilitation and other ventures.

Croatia and Croatian Americans are an integral part of American history. In fact, the early city-state of Dubrovnik in Dalmatia (southern Croatia) was one of the first countries to recognize the independence of the United States.
