SAN PEDRO, Calif. – Today, Congresswoman Nanette Diaz Barragán announced the Long Beach Water Department is receiving a $1.5 million grant from the federal Bureau of Reclamation to replace three older, inefficient water wells with two new wells.
“This project will provide significant benefits within the City of Long Beach and beyond. By decreasing the Long Beach Water Department’s reliance on expensive water imported from other sources, the residents of Long Beach will be able to lower their personal water expenses,” Congresswoman Barragán said. “By providing locally supplied water resources, this project will lower the Long Beach Water District’s carbon footprint and decrease greenhouse gas emissions, which supports the goals of the City of Long Beach’s Climate Resiliency Assessment Report.”
To replace the three older wells, the Long Beach Water Department had applied for funding from the federal Bureau of Reclamation’s FY21 WaterSMART Drought Response Program: Drought Resiliency Projects grant program. In August, Congresswoman Barragán wrote to the Bureau of Reclamation in support of the proposal.
