REP. BARRAGÁN AMENDMENTS TO INTERIOR APPROPRIATIONS BILL BLOCKED BY HOUSE REPUBLICANS

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán (D-San Pedro) reacted today after the House Committee on Rules blocked her amendments to H.R. 6147, the Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2019. Her first amendment would have restricted oil and gas drilling operations within 1,500 feet of homes, schools, health care facilities, and other protected areas.

“I am disappointed that we will not have the chance to debate my amendments on the House floor,” said Rep. Barragán. “In my district, CA-44, oil wells are in our backyards and next to parks where children play. They are breathing in the pollution from oil drilling operations and suffering the health impacts such as asthma and respiratory problems. Urban oil and gas drilling does not belong in our neighborhoods.”

Rep. Barragán’s second amendment would have blocked the White House from hiring anyone charged with the crime of domestic abuse. Both amendments were blocked by House Republicans.
