The Services, Tools and Opportunities to Prevent (STOP) Homelessness Act would create a voluntary check-off-donation-box on tax returns to help fund housing and support services.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Nanette Diaz Barragán (D-San Pedro) introduced the Services, Tools and Opportunities to Prevent (STOP) Homelessness Act today in response to the homelessness crisis confronting Los Angeles and the nation. The legislation would establish the STOP Homelessness Trust Fund to help pay for housing and support services through a voluntary “check-off-box” on the annual federal tax return. Every dollar donated would be matched 1:1 by the federal government.

“For the first time since the Great Recession homelessness is on the rise and many Americans struggle to meet their most basic needs. Every night, more than half a million people in this country have no home to go to,” said Rep. Barragán. “At a time when cities are seeing massive spikes in the numbers of people sleeping on the street, the Trump administration is proposing to drastically cut critical housing and homelessness programs. There are more than 4,000 people struggling with homelessness in the 44th Congressional District. These are our sons and daughters, our brothers and our sisters, and we must do a better job of taking care of our own.”
