Rep. Barragán statement on reports that President Trump will end DACA in six months

SAN PEDRO, Calif.—Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán (D-San Pedro) put out a statement following media reports that President Trump will end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA):

“The news the president is ending DACA is heartbreaking for Dreamers everywhere and for me personally.

DACA recipients merely want a chance to succeed and to give back to the only country they call home. Dreamers shouldn’t spend the next six months in constant fear about their future.

We’re on the edge of a human rights crisis and now more than ever Congress needs to act. Republicans who have spent the last few weeks advocating for a legislative fix must step up and unite with Democrats to act, immediately.

More than a thousand Dreamers each day need their deferral renewed. Dreamers are doctors, teachers, rescue workers and college students. They are family. DACA was a promise to nearly a million young men and women across the nation that they could trust the government and come out of the shadows. Dreamers are Americans in very way except their birth certificate. The economy and our community colleges will also suffer if we let DACA die.

We must act quickly. Given Speaker Paul Ryan’s call for a legislative solution and the support of nearly two dozen of my Republican colleagues for DACA protections, let’s put the DREAM Act on the floor and ensure we keep our country’s promise to Dreamers.”
