Rep. Barragán statement on Trump’s cancellation of DACA

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán (D-San Pedro) put out the following statement following Trump’ administration’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:

“Today’s announcement by Attorney General Jeff Sessions ending the DACA program was disgusting and heartbreaking. It continues to show the lack of compassion and cruelty the administration has for our immigrant communities.

Today the administration did more of the same: provide misleading statements while defending the heartless decision. Dreamers are doctors, teachers, rescue workers and college students. Dreamers contribute hundreds of billions of dollars to the economy. They’ve started new businesses, bought houses and worked hard. They are neighbors, and family. They are not political bargaining chips.

Terminating DACA is a betrayal to young men and women who were told by the only country they know to come out of the shadows without fear of repercussions.

Today communities across the country rose up to support DREAMers and to make their voices heard. I joined with them—I’m committed to fight to protect DREAMers in Congress.

Congress must act immediately. Republicans who have spent the last few weeks advocating for a legislative fix must step up and unite with Democrats to act, now.

Speaker Paul Ryan and the Republican House leadership should bring the DREAM Act to the floor for a vote without delay.”
