Barragán Statement on Her Votes Against The Continuing Resolution And GOP Disaster Package

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Nanette Diaz Barragán (D-San Pedro) issued the following statement today on her votes against final passage of the continuing resolution and the GOP emergency disaster funding package:

“I remain convinced that any spending bill that does not include the bipartisan DREAM Act is completely inadequate,” said Rep. Barragán.

“The continuing resolution that I voted against today only serves to needlessly extend the uncertainty that our nearly 800,000 Dreamers face over their futures. 122 of our finest young men and women lose their status every day and will continue to do so until Congress acts. Until DACA is addressed and our Dreamers are protected, I will continue to vote against any must-pass spending bill.”

This continuing resolution also fails to reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance program, or CHIP, which provides long-term certainty for 9 million children and their families. It’s unconscionable that Republicans let this vital program expire while just yesterday they passed massive tax cuts for the top one percent of earners.

The emergency disaster supplemental package—which I also voted against—fails to adequately fund the various disaster relief operations in California, Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The bill also does nothing to address the looming Medicaid cliffs that both Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands will soon face. The package also includes a provision that exempts FEMA from certain requirements of the Endangered Species Act. This would allow the agency to approve and subsidize development in flood-prone areas, even if that means destroying critical habitat or directly harming endangered species.”
