Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Nanette Barragán (CA-44) proudly joined House Financial Services Committee Ranking Member Maxine Waters, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin, Assistant Leader Joe Neguse, and members of the Litigation Working Group in filing an amicus brief to defend the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) from illegal and unconstitutional attacks by the Trump Administration.

The lawsuit, NTEU v. CFPB Acting Director Russell Vought, challenges the Trump Administration’s sweeping efforts to dismantle the CFPB—including stopping enforcement cases, slashing staff, and granting Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) access to vast amounts of sensitive consumer financial data.

“For over a decade, the CFPB has been a watchdog for working families, securing over $21 billion in relief for 205 million Americans harmed by financial abuse,” said Rep. Barragán. “Now, Trump and his allies are doing the bidding of big banks and predatory lenders, trying to destroy the agency that protects everyday Americans from junk fees, unfair overdraft charges, and corporate scams. We won’t let it happen. I’m proud to stand with House Democrats to defend the CFPB—because your wallet is worth fighting for.”

The CFPB is overwhelmingly popular, with four out of five Americans, including 77% of Republicans, supporting its mission. Without it, financial markets would be left in a regulatory vacuum, leaving consumers vulnerable to exploitation.

House Democrats are committed to defending consumer protections and ensuring that the CFPB can continue its vital work to create a fair, stable, and transparent financial system.
