WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Nanette Barragán (CA-44) released the following statement:

“Profit should never come before American families, which is why the House just passed the Ratepayer Protection Act. This bill is a first step to ensure data center developers rightfully bear the higher electricity costs that come with the construction of these data centers —  NOT families and small businesses.

However, this is just the first step. Congress must do more. Not only must Congress work to shield families from the higher electricity costs, we must also take concrete action to prevent health and environmental impacts from the data centers, and ensure those that get built follow strong labor standards. America can lead in AI and innovation, but it must do so safely and without sacrificing the health of our families.”
