Rep. Barragán Blasts Trump Administration and ICE for Refusing Congressional Oversight Visit at Adelanto Detention Facility

San Bernardino County, CA — Yesterday, Congresswoman Nanette Barragán (CA-44) visited the Adelanto Detention Facility to conduct congressional oversight of the private immigration detention center, alongside Congresswoman Norma Torres (CA-35). At the facility, ICE staffers refused Congresswoman Barragán’s request, citing the Trump administration’s new and unlawful policy that requires Members of Congress to provide a 7-day notice before the intended day of inspection.

Upon ICE’s refusal to permit an official oversight tour, Rep. Barragán exercised her visitation rights, rights afforded to members of the public, to meet with individuals from her district who are detained at the facility. She listened to their stories about the treatment and their experiences while in custody. These are long-time community members with no criminal record who have lived in the United States for more than two decades and contributed to the local economy.

“Families are being ripped apart because of the Trump administration,” said Rep. Barragán. “Congressional oversight is a federally protected tool through which Members of Congress can call out the inhumane treatment of immigrants and oversee how billions of hardworking taxpayers’ dollars are being spent. The administration’s attempts to block this right through these new rules like a 7-day-notice is not only illegal, it is a deliberate attempt to hide its actions and escape accountability from the people. I will continue to fight for transparency in immigration detention facilities like Adelanto and to demand accountability for the American people.”
