Barragán Hosts Fourth Annual Briefing and Health Fair for Older Adults

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 18th, 2020

San Pedro, Calif. – This morning, Congressmember Nanette Diaz Barragán hosted her fourth annual Briefing and Health Fair for Older Adults, this time remotely due to the COVID-19 crisis. Typically a large community event full of live performances, information booths, and photobooths, Rep. Barragán still strived to bring this sense of community into her virtual event.

“This is a difficult time for the older adults in our community. Many are more isolated from their loved ones and friends, and are worried about staying healthy during this pandemic,” said Rep. Barragán. “My annual Briefing and Health Fair has always worked to bring our community together and to tell our older neighbors that you matter. Now, that sentiment is more important than ever.”

A mix of entertainment and information, the event featured several local performers, including singer Ieshania Williams (Lynwood), The Willowbrook Line Dancers led by NAME Brooks (Los Angeles), and a recorded song from the California State University Dominguez Jazz Band. To remind participants of better times, the event shared a video featuring photos of previous health fairs.

Along with a legislative briefing from the Congresswoman, presenters from the Center for Healthcare Rights and the L.A. County Department of Workforce Development, Aging and Community Services shared helpful information on resources available to senior citizens in California’s 44th District.

“This is my favorite event of the year,” said Rep. Barragán. “While I wish we could be together again today, we must continue to do everything we can to protect one another – especially our older community members– during this pandemic. My office stands ready to support my constituents to stay safe and healthy during COVID-19.”
