Statement by Rep. Barragán on Visit to Detention Centers at US, Mexico Border
San Diego – Today, Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán, Leader Nancy Pelosi and fellow members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus visited several immigration detention facilities in the San Diego area. The members witnessed first-hand the brutal effects of the Trump Administration’s immigration and family separation policies.
“There’s no reason for the human suffering I witnessed today. With the stroke of a pen, Donald Trump can end these disgusting policies. He and his administration alone owns this crisis.
“I had the opportunity to talk with three women that my office has been assisting who are in detention at the Otay Mesa Detention Facility and have had their children taken from them. They are in good physical health but are rightly devastated because they’ve been without their children for months. They were not allowed to say good-bye when their children were ripped away from them and initially had no idea where they were being taken.
“It is heartbreaking and an injustice.”
