Rep. Barragán Holds Town Hall on Water Quality in Compton
Congresswoman Pushes for Infrastructure Funding
Washington, D.C- Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán (CA-44) led a Town Hall last night in Compton that gave residents the opportunity to address public health and environmental concerns over their water quality and safety. Environmental and public health experts as well as the Sativa Water District, the local utility in charge of water delivery, were on hand to directly address residents’ concerns about brown-colored tap water.
“No one wants to drink brown water, nor should they have to,” said Rep. Barragán. “The residents of Compton have lived with the threat of poor water quality for too long. Instead of giving tax breaks to the 1%, Congress should be investing in our communities in order to ensure that our families have clean water. No parent wants their kids bathing in or drinking brown water.”
Compton, like many communities of color around the country, is suffering from a lack of investment in its water infrastructure. Aging pipes and wells can cause water contamination. Legislation like the Water Affordability, Transparency, Equity and Reliability (WATER) Act, which Rep. Barragán is an original cosponsor of, would appropriate funding for projects that would replace aging pipes and wells, while simultaneously creating new jobs.
Rep. Barragán announced a second Town Hall will be held to update residents on any developments that may arise and to increase communication between them and her office on this vital water quality issue.
