 Rep. Barragán Requests Homeland Security Committee Hearing on Recent Shootings

Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán (D-San Pedro) today called for the House Committee on Homeland Security to hold a hearing on the threat of homegrown terrorism in a letter to Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas). The request comes after recent shootings in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Sutherland, Texas.

“Gun violence claims more than 30,000 lives per year. It’s unacceptable that Congress refuses to act,” said Rep. Barragán. “Many in Congress seem satisfied offering thoughts and prayers and holding moments of silence. I will not be silent. The Homeland Security Committee must hold hearings on gun violence in America and do all we can to protect Americans from this epidemic.”

The Committee on Homeland Security has broad authority to identify and deter threats to the Homeland. Rep. Barragán sits on the committee, including the subcommittees on oversight and management efficiency and border and maritime security. The full text of the letter is below:
