FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 4th, 2020

San Pedro, CA – Tonight, Congressmember Nanette Diaz Barragán was joined by L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn for a telephone town hall to give updates on resources available to people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Around 8,000 constituents from the 44th Congressional District attended the call and were given the chance to ask questions directly to their elected officials.

“Now more than ever, I want my constituents to get up-to-date, accurate information about the federal coronavirus response and current public health recommendations,” said Congressmember Barragán. “House Democrats passed a comprehensive COVID-19 relief package 11 weeks ago, but Senate Republicans are holding up these critical supports while communities like mine suffer and struggle. Helping our constituents survive a pandemic should not be political. Senator McConnell needs to pass the Heroes Act immediately.”

The House’s HEROES Act includes extending expanded unemployment benefits, an extension of the federal eviction moratorium, hazard pay for essential workers, funding for COVID-19 testing and tracing, and funding to help state and local governments avoid layoffs of essential workers like firefighters, teachers, EMTs and other health care workers. More information on the details of the Heroes Act are available here.

Barragán continued. “Much of the direct, day-to-day response to this pandemic is happening at the local level. That’s why I’m grateful L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn was able to join tonight’s telephone town hall.”

L.A. Supervisor Janice Hahn Represents the County’s 4th District and preceded Barragán as California’s 44th District Representative in Congress.

“Our communities are struggling and L.A. County is putting CARES Act dollars to work, getting families the help they need to make it through this unprecedented crisis,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn. “Telephone townhalls like these are vital ways for residents to learn about these programs and how they can get connected with help.”
