Barragán Statement On Attack At Congressional Baseball Team Practice

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Nanette Diaz Barragán issued the following statement following the gun attack against the Republican congressional baseball team practice in Alexandria, Va.:

“My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with those affected by today’s senseless shooting.

“There is no time for partisanship today. We are Americans first. This attack on my colleague, staff and our Capitol Police officers is despicable and cowardly.  I am wishing for a speedy recovery for those wounded, including Rep. Scalise, Officers Crystal Griner and David Bailey, Zack Barth, and Matt Mika.

“I was at a separate practice field when the attack occurred with my Democratic colleagues, looking forward to joining my first game on Thursday. As soon as we heard what happened, we were horrified.

“After calling our families to let them know we were safe, we huddled together in our dugout to say a prayer.

“I’m deeply grateful to the Capitol Police who responded swiftly to the situation so that no others were injured.

“Capitol Police Officers moved quickly to ensure our safety, and to the SWAT team that made sure that others could return without danger–I thank them for their service today and every day.

“This is a wake-up call for us all. But I will continue to be accessible to my constituents and will join my colleagues in unity today.”
